• My BJJ training began in Taiwan at a friend's house.  He'd bought a book from the internet and wanted to start learning BJJ, which we had both been interested in for a long time.  For the next several months we spent our Tuesday and Thursday evenings rolling around in a bicycle storage room choking each other and a growing number of classmates. (With some success)  In February of 2004, we convinced a brown belt from California to move to Taiwan to help us establish Taiwan's first BJJ academy.  I had a very good year in 2004 training at that school and owe a lot to those first friends in Taiwan without whom I never would have set foot on the mat.
