May 1-2, 2009 Belt grading results and Roy Harris seminar write up Congratulations to the 12 students that tested for their Black, Brown and Blue belts this weekend at BDB Martial Arts with Roy Harris. Also the seminar with Roy Harris on Saturday was a huge success with 85 people in attendance, the largest seminar to date. We have people come from Quebec, Ontario, BC and cities around Alberta such as Cranbrook, Cochrane, Lethbridge, Calgary and Edmonton attending the seminar. Roy taught guard passing and as always his attention to detail and knowledge are amazing and the reason why he brings out so many people to participate.
The Black Belt exam is a 3 1/ 2 hours long test. This is a basic idea of what happened. Sheila was asked to demonstrate some technical mount escapes because a huge emphasis is always placed upon escapes. Then one after another Sheila’s 6 training partners were told to pin her in various positions such as mount, scarf hold, knee on belly, cross mount, North South until Sheila escaped 3 times with each person doing each position with numerous partners. There was also a teaching aspect of the test to show how she would deal with various difficulties that arise such as students who don’t listen, blind and deaf students, advanced level students and beginners. Roy’s expectation of a Black Belt is to not just to have skills on the mat but also be able to have a high level of teaching skills. Then comes the fun part of the test, Sheila gets to use top positions and finish her partners with submissions. At the end of the test she sparred with all her training partners once and at the end with Roy. It is a requirement of this test to push your limits and not to give up. Quitting would be an automatic fail. After Sheila received her Black Belt from Roy Harris it was an emotional moment for her to make comments and give thanks and credit to everyone who has supported her throughout the past 11 years since she started Jiu-Jitsu.
The Brown Belt exam is a 2 ½ hours long test. Brad and Nick did exceptionally well. Roy gave then a 9 out of 10 for how great they did. Brad and Nick both displayed the level of skills in technique and sparring that Roy requires and beyond that they showed determination and heart pushing themselves at the very end while Brian and Roy sparred them using very heavy top pressure.
There is a huge emphasis in the Blue belt exam on technical knowledge. All the guys who tested have spent hours upon hours working on their curriculum of about 120 techniques they had to know for this test. It was obvious they had all put in the time and effort and passed with flying colours. At the end of the exam Roy sparred with all of them so they could experience what it is like to spar a forth degree Black Belt and feel what it is like to being pushed hard and have to keep going and not quit.
