Results from the Arnold's Classic NAGA Grappling World Championships
and UFC 96 with fighter Jason “Dooms” Day local Alberta fighter.

Competitors: Sheila Bird, Nick Ring, Brad Cardinal, Jenna King, Jason Day

The Arnold’s Classic World Grappling Championships is one of the largest tournaments in North America. There were over 1,500 competitors at this one tournament. The grappling was run by NAGA that hosts numerous popular tournaments every year.

Sheila had 4 matches in total in the 135-160 lb advanced division. She fought in the Gi and NO-Gi divisions. In the No-Gi she won by her famous "sheila choke" (scissor choke) and flying arm bar. In the Gi she won by kimura and the last match by points, controlling top position and passing the guard 2 times.

Nick fought in the advanced 200 lb division and won 2nd place. He had 4 matches, winning 3 by guillotine choke and lost his final match to points.

Brad had 4 matches in the 170 lb division . Brad and one other purple belt fought in the advanced division. All the other purple belts fought in the intermediate. Brad wanted to test himself and he won 3 matches and lost one winning Bronze medal. His first match he won by arm bar, second match by points, lost his 3rd match to heel hook, and won his Bronze medal match by guillotine (Bradotine).

Jenna won 3rd place in Gi and 2nd in No-Gi. It was Jenna's first grappling tournament and the team is very excited at how well she performed, coming in very nervous she executed her techniques under pressure. Jenna's attitude towards competing is very positive. She was excited to step up and fight hard coming away with some medals and a great tournament experience.

Both Brad and Nick competed in the Absolute Division. There were about 30 guys in the division. Brad's first opponent was against a BJJ Black belt; Brad had him in 3 guillotines and was attacking like a mad man. He won the match, beating the Black belt by point advantage. Nick made it all the way to the finals with 4 matches and placed 2nd. He got a rear naked choke in one match, won two matches by point advantage and in Nick's last match he was aggressive but the guy was a strong (huge) wrestler and got take down points. The winner of the absolute wins a title belt and $1,000 cash, it was so close but Nick will get it next time.

Jason “Dooms” Day fought Kendal “Da Spyder” Grove at the UFC 96 later that night. Jason was in fighting shape and mentally on. He came out striking and executing his game plan, Kendal got a clean right cross in through Jason’s defenses and Jason went down. It was a disappointing loss for Jason because he was physically and mentally the best he has felt for any fight. Jason is already back training and back at it. We look forward to seeing what comes next for Jason.

Once again, BDB Martial Arts represented our grappling skills internationally and made our mark.

Thanks to Brian Bird for being there for the team, as usual, coaching and making this event possible. He works the competition team hard mentally and physically in competition class Wednesday nights at BDB and works with them privately 2 times per week techniqually to get everyone ready for the competitions. His instruction and coaching make the fighter’s champions at world level competitions. We couldn't do it without him.
